What is waste reduction/prevention

Waste reduction occurs before any waste is produced

Waste prevention for reduction is the complete range of measures and actions taken up before a substance, material or product becomes waste:

These measures aim to reduce:

  • the quantity of waste produced, including through the intermediary process of reuse or by lengthening the lifespan of products
  • the harmful effects of waste produced and treated, both on the environment and on human health

5 principals themes of the EWWR: from product conception to reuse

Ø Too much waste: make known the importance of our waste production and its environment and economical impact

Ø Better production: encourage businesses to put in place measures that allow for the reduction of large quantities of waste caused by their economic activity

Ø Better consumption: raise consumer awareness about the impact of their purchases on waste production

Ø A longer life for products: emphasise the means of increasing the life span of a new product (repair, reuse, etc.)

Ø Less waste thrown away: demonstrate the solutions that prevent waste being thrown away (paying attention to the use-by-date for the consumption of products, practising home composting, No Junk Mail signs)

The best waste is that which is not produced…

…waste reduction is done daily, and very easily!
